No More Mondays

This post is about following your dreams. Doing what you love. Being happy every day. And No More Mondays. I love that phrase. I first heard it about a year ago from the evil great financial guru Dave Ramsey. A man named Dan Miller wrote the book with this title, about following your dreams and making your career what you love, not what you love to hate. That way there is no more dread on Sunday night. No more waiting for Friday to arrive. No more Mondays.

For me, it started when I was pregnant a few years ago. Many of you know how getting that news completely changes your focus. All the things you say you'd never do -- you want to do. I always said I would work full time after I had a child, but all the sudden, when it was real, I felt differently. I loved my marketing job so much. I loved the people I worked with. I was just getting bored. When I had started my position was brand new -- and I had built it up and was proud of it, but realized after a few years that it didn't need to be a full time position. So when I found out I was pregnant, I was hoping they would work with me on a part time/work from home plan. We talked for months about it and in the end their response was simple -- NO. I was devastated.

There are usually bigger plans for us that we just aren't aware of. I wasn't aware of mine.
Then our squishy-face-so-cute-I-could-die-I-love-you-more-than-the-moon son arrived. And as we all know, babies change everything. During my leave, I told my husband I wanted to do something different. My heart was calling me to something I really wanted to do -- decorating. I had tried for years to get into the business. I even got my own Web site, made business cards, talked to many interior designers, and it went nowhere. The only response I ever got from the professionals was I had to go back to school for another degree (this time in design) to make my dream a reality. I had just done another few years of masters classes, so there ain't noooooo way I was going back to school folks.

But it was still calling to me -- and I was determined. Right before I went back to work, I made one last ditch effort to make my dream a reality. I e-mailed every. single. person I had known, knew or cared to know and told them my dream. I wanted to decorate. Did they know anyone? Could they help?

Wouldn't you know it. We had a close connection that we didn't even know about. She owned a home decor shop and design firm. I called her that night and fell. in. love. I met with her a week later and she made my dream come true. She hired me on as her assistant to learn the ropes. I did it, I loved it, I thrived on it and I learned a lot. I got my first client just a couple months later.

For more than two years now, I've been working with clients part time, helping them decorate their homes. I have loved it, learned so much and had so much fun. It has sparked my creativity, made me better, broadened my horizons. But now, something else has been pulling at my heart.

I guess not something. Many things. Many people. YOU. I am so in love with writing this blog, I enjoy it so much I cannot tell you. I have met so many wonderful people, made so many new friends, and been more inspired through you then anywhere else in my life. I LOVE IT.

Lately I've had this urge -- this desire to focus just on this blog and put all of my attention to it and really make it all it can be. So I've decided to do it. For the time being anyway, I'm not doing design work anymore. I'm going where my heart is telling me to go and that's here. I want to put more effort and time into it, I want to inspire you even more.

I am so excited people. I am loopy!! Like, adrenaline rush, excited. YAY!!

So to kick it off, I wanted to share a few of the changes and new things coming soon:

Consultations:
I've been offering these for a while now and will continue to do it. For $10, you send me as many pictures as you want of your space or large project. I'll give you a long list of my suggestions on furniture placement, paint colors, accessory ideas, molding projects, painting furniture, etc. All with your budget in mind. But now, I'm hoping to get new software so I can offer you a little more in the consult -- like using your pictures to show you what I'm talking about. I think this is so exciting, it's just going to be a learning curve for me. I haven't used a design program in forever. Any suggestions? Photoshop? Something different?

Facebook and Twitter: I've been doing both for a while now, but my I've been neglecting my Crackbook page badly, sorry about that. You can find me on Twitter here. I have been loving Twitter like I never thought I would people. I used to make so. much. fun of it. Swear. But in the future, I hope to offer even more updates on both -- while I walk through Goodwill I'll take a picture and share how I'd make it fab. (Many of you say you need help with the creativity part.) If I spot a deal, I tweet about it. It's fun. And on Facebook (search Thrifty Decor Chick), I'm going to start highlighting some of your projects from the Linky parties. I'm giddy at the potential folks, I hope you'll join me.

Blog design: Ummmm...I've been a total slacker on this -- it's been in the works for MONTHS. I'm finally getting serious about it now, and we hope to have it up in the next few weeks. I'm so excited I could pee.

Advertising: As you know, I offer this now, but I've added some options. If you are interested in finding out more about them, let me know. And with the new blog design, your ads will be more prominent than before.

Getting the word out: I need your help you Web gurus -- how do I go to get my blog out there more? Do I need to register it somewhere? What the heck does "feed" mean? What is my url address (I thought it was my Web address)? I'm clueless folks. Do I need to improve my domain or whatever the heck that is? I have no idea what that is. Help. Please.

More projects and more FUN!!: Do you have suggestions? Ideas for parties? What do you think? Tell me!! Fall is going to be here before we know it, so if it's going to be anything like last year, I'll be posting fast and furiously. What do you want to see here? I want to know because I want you to be inspired and entertained. YOU are the reason I'm here.

Thanks for putting up with my excitement folks. I know it's not a big deal to you, but I am so happy with this decision. It didn't come easily and it took weeks to make it happen, but I'm really happy I'm following my heart. I hope I inspire you to do the same -- whether it's in in your home, life or work.

Tomorrow is Monday but won't be for me. Because of you. Sniff.

P.S. Sorry I'm all gushy here but I'm all verklempt. Oh, and can I tell you how much I love you all and how much you all ROCK? Do you know how many e-mails and questions I got about my Summer Beer recipe?? Ummmm...lots. It's 12 ounces light beer, Diet Squirt and tequila and then a concentrate can of limeade or lemonade. That makes plenty. You could also use Sprite or another clear soda I'm sure. It's all good and you all rock. Smooches.

I'm in the middle of an office makeover thanks to you! My husband really appreciates it. :) I just want to make my space beautiful, you know? And I'm a terrible organizer, but i'm getting better. Looking forward to all of your posts.

Yay I love your blog, your playroom is my FAVORITE! I really want to do the consultation thing and send you some pictures of my living room because I am having pillow issues! And I just might have to email you about the advertising thing, I just started a website selling hair bows and other handmade baby things and I am trying to get the word out. I am trying to keep the prices super low because who wants to spend a ton of money on that stuff? Okay I am going to email you...

Hi there! I have been following your blog for a couple weeks when I recently got on a decorating kick. I am so glad you are focusing more on it because I visit it everyday to see what new ideas you have to share with everyone! I look forward to seeing more!!

I have a suggestion on what I would like to see on your blog! What are some good ways to decorate without painting or using wallpaper? (Oh, and cheap too) Us apartment-goers are limited to the creativity we can put on our walls and mine are just...well, blah - without being able to paint. I would love to hear suggestions if you have any!

I too love the blog. While I have zero creativity or patience, I learned that I love to spray paint thanks to you. You will make oodles of money from me. I want to go take a pic of my kichen right now. How much to fly you to my house in AL?

I.Love.Your.Blog!!!! I usually don't leave comments. Yes I am one of blog stalkers! Ha! I found your blog a couple of months ago and it is now my FAVORITE!!! You inspired me to finally start working on my precious little boy's playroom. The precious little boy who was the reason I left a job that I LOVED but had grown bored with to be a stay at home mom. I swore up and down that I would never be one of those. Fortunately God knew all along I was going to be one. So glad to hear about your decision! I can't wait for your next post!

You can change your url to just simple www.thryftydecorchick.com ( if available0 the best way to do it since you are on blogger is to go to the settings and you can add and look for a domain you want and blogger will redirect all your visitors that are going to your old domain (thriftydecor.blgospot.com) to the new one...and is only $9.
You can also start a tumblr account ( a blog between tweeter and blogspot)...another way of getting yourself out there!

I think you are doing pretty well getting out there..You are one of the most popular sites I know! From what I know, your URl is your http:// blog address. web addresses are www. You can make sure you are on the majority of blog linking sites like blogarama, blogflux etc. there are about a bazillion to get linking. I've got the biggest exposure from advertising on other blogs.I've noticed a lot about blogging is time. Cindy at My romantic home is the one to talk to about getting big, really big.

I too am trying to do what I love. My husband and I were taking Dave Ramsey's Financial Peace University when he asked a question about whether you love your job or not. Being a stay at home mom I love my job! But I have also written a couple of e-book tutorials but wasn't really in love with doing that. When Dave presented the question I decided that I Love quilting and that I would start to focus on that. So now I am in the process of writing quilting patterns and embroidery patterns. I couldn't be happier.

At the time I had an Etsy shop where I sold childrens clothes. I decided I hated sewing for others. So I switched my focus and now I sell digital profile silhouettes and I love it!

I can understand following your heart. Just because we are stay at home moms doesn't mean we have to give up our dreams. We just have to work them into our lives!

You have such fabulous ideas that I am dying to try. Your laundry room is a true inspriaton and I have 4 uppercase living sayings in my house already!! I also heart facebook and will share your info, (great resource that millions will see!) I think that is a good marketing idea too. YOu could put your button as an ad on fb. scroll to the bottom and click advertising and set up your ad!! Love ya and hope things continue to do great for you! Way to go on following your heart. Good for you! If you ever decide to expand *wink wink* I'll work for ya! The hubster has been out of work since January and although it pays the rent, I'm sick and tired (really, tendonitis and a go-round with pneumonia) of cleaning up after people. I'm currently the caretaker of 2 large apartment complexes which means I get all the glory of cleaning up ater people who leave their homes and none of the fun of actually making it into a home. Now, this nugget leads me to a request for your new venture...ideas for folks who rent. No wallpaper, paint, or lots of holes in the walls allowed as well as light weight or easy to move furniture, etc. for the lucky peeps who live on upper floors (with no elevators. EEEK!) Warmest wishes to you on following your dream! You are doing what a lot of us out here want to be doing so get out there and do it to your heart's content!

Hey Lady! As far as getting the word out about your blog. I know that you can pay (not sure how much...I can check) so that if someone types "home decorating" or "cheap home decorating" or whatever, into google, it will make your blog come up as the first link so that would make a ton of people come to it. Not sure if you'd be interested in that at all but my Dad used to work for google doing that so I can ask him about it if ya want! Also, I saw you spray painting something in your driveway on Sunday, I'll have to check back on your blog to see what it was! :) :)

You just picked me up after a long horrid weekend of, "I am going no where" and "what am I doing with my life". Like you, I had a dream of being a stay-at home mommy, at least part time. That has not come to fruition for me. I think I truly lack the focus necessary. But it's always inspiring to read about real people achieving this dream.
I have been following your blog now for less than a month, and you are already more motivating than I can explain.

Dear Sarah,

I'm not a blog expert, but I do read quite a few blogs. Yours is one I really like. So here's what I think you should do: just what you've been doing. Your blog is fun to read, your instructions are easy to follow, your ideas are inspirational. So I say: If it ain't broke, don't fix it. Thrifty Decor Chick ain't broke. Now, if you want to do more of what you're already doing, I think we'll all love that.

I hope it works out for you to be able to devote yourself to doing just this, where your passion so obviously lies. Best of luck to you in this venture. Just don't take away the Sarah that we know and love!

Blessings,
Richella

Sarah,

I found your blog by googling "beadboard" about 2 weeks ago and now I check in EVERY DAY. I have been watching your "followers" count go up every day and I have wondered to myself a few things:
1. WHY you DON'T just focus on this blog (glad to see you make the change)
2. WHY you don't make more money off of it (as some bloggers apparently do via advertising)
3. WHY i am so obsessed and inspired by you and your constant projects that get FINISHED!

I would really love it if you could help motivate me to FINISH my projects in a timely manner! I have great creativity and the naivete to assume I can pull off just about anything that I think of, but then i get overwhelmed and distracted and over-budget and lose my steam!! help!

My mom's a master decorator so I feel like I have huge shoes to fill! I'm amazed at all the projects you've completed in the two months that I've done NOTHING. But, I just spent the last month painting (because you said it is so easy) and decorating and getting things to feel cozy. So thank you for the inspiration! I love this post. As far as getting your blog out there there are many ways to do it...registering it on just about every social networking site you can find, guest blogs, flat out e-mailing people and telling them about your blog, and so much more...it's all about connecting with people I believe and since you have so many great things to offer, I don't think it will be too hard for you. ;)

Sarah,
Yay for you! I'm so excited that you're following your dream. I might be able to help with the domain name. If you go to GoDaddy.com. You can purchase a domain name (i.e. www.thriftydecorchick.com, or whatever you want it to be) for under $20 per year I think. Then you just link it up to blogger so you don't have to change HOW you upload and arrange your stuff. If you do have your domain name, then it will make you more easily accessible to searches, look better on business cards, etc. Just a thought. :) I just moved to a new space so I might hit you up for a consultation soon too. :)

love, Love, LOVE your blog. For real. Didn't know if you were up for blogging topic suggestions.. but I have one. Perhaps a series! Decorating--Where to Start. Some of us really enjoy reading crafting blogs, buying things to make over, etc... but where to we start?? I think, molding, beadboard my kitchen, redo cabinets, makeover bedroom, and suddenly, I can't do anything because it is sooooooo over. welming. And take care of kids. And make meals, and clean house, and live life. I just need some direction of START HERE. THEN DO THIS. Just a thought, thanks for listening!! Keep up the fab work!!

Sooo excited for you!...I started following you via Twitter, so I feel like I don't miss a thing ;)

I totally recommend Adobe Photoshop. It isn't the easiest to learn, but there are a ton of great, FREE tutorials online. It's also very versatile. You will use it for a lot more than you think. You can totally use it to build room layouts for furniture placement, etc. You can also use it to create a totally custom blog, a "logo" design, digital design boards, not to mention all of the wonderful designs you can make for crafting!! (and having fun with photos of the kiddos!)

Struggler said...

Congratulations, this is so exciting. I remember from previous jobs that Sunday night feeling, and it was awful!

Might I suggest, go down to your local library, and borrow (request) a couple of blogging books. They'll help you fill in any holes in your basic knowledge. I've recently got value out of the Huffington Post's blogging guide, and Blogger for Dummies.

Next, look at blogs you admire, or with features you'd like to offer. What do they use to do that? Are they on Blogger, or WordPress? (WordPress, I think, is a bit more feature rich).

And of course, you can see advice from blogland. Places like
http://www.problogger.net/
would be good for you to check out, and/or you can search on a particular topic that has you stumped.

Wishing you the very best of luck!

Ok, so you probably don't remember me because clearly you have a million fans (me included!) but I sent you an email a couple months back about how wonderful your blog is and how you're so inspiring and all that jazz. Well, since then, besides reading your blog, I've been quite the busy bee! In most part, thanks to you :). I actually just finished redoing my kitchen and posted it on my blog. The reason I'm telling you this (besides hoping you'll give me your opinion!) is that I gave props to you in my post :). So you go on with your bad self and jump in with both feet. You're amazing and will no doubt be successful. I wish you all the luck in the world!!! And thank you, thank you, thank you for all of your inspiring posts!

xoxo

Here are some things I've read about getting more exposure....most of them I'm trying myself on my site.
*Get Biz Cards - Free at Vista Print and others - Leave them everywhere-at the table at restaurants, Joann's etc.
*Do guest posts on other blogs...my blog visits sky rocket when I do this.
*Host a Giveaway and link with other sites that share this info. Ask the people entering to tweet about it etc.
I visit you're site daily and I have your button on my favorites page. I have also posted about several projects I've done that you have inspired. I'd love a guest post on my blog from you!
Keep up the great work and let us know what works to drive your traffic.
Thanks for the inpiration:
Karen

Congrats on your new direction! God led me to start a private practice from my home office, last September (I'm a Lactation Consultant). It was exciting yet scary. But my family will tell you it was the BEST decision ever!!! I know you will enjoy every minute of your work. I look forward to using you for design help! God bless you and your sweet family, Sarah :D

Can I first just say that I have no idea how you get all this done with a little boy at home! I have a 2 year old and 9 month old and I'm lucky just to clean the countertops, forget decorating. I absolutely love your blog though, so someday I'll be able to put it into practice. In the meantime, I've come across a site that might help with your blog aspirations. A mom with a very successful blog is writing a series of entries on how to be a professional blogger (mixed in with some extremely entertaining mom posts). You may already know it: http://www.absolutelybananas.com/

The post you see when you scroll all the way down is just one of many in her series. She writes in an easy-to-read fashion, is very forward with advice, and give tons of great information. Most of the posts are found in her archives I believe. Hope this helps!

Ok so I've been "stalking" your blog everyday for about a year now. Never really said any comments not because I didn't want to, but because I always forgot to. But this post inspired me so much and I knew I just had to write something! I've told EVERYONE I know about your site! I absolutely L-O-V-E it! You inspire me every day! And I pretty much almost peed my pants when I read that you would offer consultations! And $10 bucks is something I can afford which made me even more giddy! The only thing missing, a home. I live in a crappy apartment still who doesn't let us even hang pictures on the wall. Yeah...tell me about it...but I will definitely tell my mother about it!...and sister...and sisters in laws...and every woman I know! My mother is more of the girl who loves to work on cars, knows every tool, and has no clue how to decorate (I got that gene from her). She gets so down on herself because she can't "see" things or know what goes together and neither can I so I can't help her. I will definitely tell her this delightful news and hopefully she can finally one day feel good about her home. Thank you so much for your delightful posts and for sharing your incredible talent with us all! And especially for making your suggestions and help at a price that people can afford instead of the 100's and 1,000's of dollars most places do. =0) (sry this is so long)

I would blame it on your beer, but I don't drink. Not that I've never been accused of being drunk.
