IKEA makes me happy

Hello there! Hope you’re feeling the heat wave we are here – it’s positively balmy in our house tonight! Crazy! SPRING is on it’s way, and that makes me so happy. I’m excited to start getting my hands in the dirt again!

I’ve been one lucky chick lately – I’ve taken TWO trips to IKEA within the past two weeks. I’ve only been four times, and the first two times were within weeks of each other, just like this time.

They pump addictive-ness into the air in there, really. IKEA

There’s just something about IKEA. Before I had been, it was that place that I wanted to visit SO BAD. I’d see posts like this one and wanted to see all the Swedish goodness. And now that I’ve been, it just makes me giddy to go back.

I don’t know what the deal is. Maybe that’s it’s two hours away and I go rarely so it’s a treat. Maybe because it’s HUGE and you never see everything on one trip.

Maybe it’s just that they have some really fun stuff for CHEAP. Hmmm…I’m going with all of the above.

I would venture to say that the Danish Modern IKEA style is a far stretch from the more traditional style in our house. But there’s pieces throughout that would fit into most any home. And did I mention…cheap?

Anyhoo, on the first trip back a couple of weeks ago, I took the Bub with me. Today, my friend Traci from Beneath My Heart and I met up to spend the day together. We were just two crayzay Moms, shopping, eating and drinking sodas. (I gave myself a “soda pass” for the day.) ;)

I LOVE TRACI. I seriously have a major girl crush on her. We dined on Swedish meatballs (I think it’s an IKEA law you must eat them upon entering the store) and chatted our way through the place.

I took some pictures of a few of my favorite finds from both trips to share with you!

This pillow is so Pottery Barn-esque – the floral design is embroidered on the front, the striped fabric is on the back:

So pretty! I think it was $15? Can’t remember for sure. But it’s not a small pillow either – and super soft.

I love the blankets they have throughout the store:

We thought this one would make a pretty scarf:

OK. A very large pretty scarf. Very warm though! ;)

Their fabric selection is SO FUN:

Such great colors for a kid’s space or any fun and bright spot! I picked up a little somethin’ somethin’ for the Bub’s room – the perfect finishing touch I’ve been looking for for some time now. Can’t wait to bust out my new sewing machine and get ‘er done. :)

Many of you ask about the sofa table in our kitchen/family room, and this is it:

It’s the Hemnes sofa table and it comes in a brown/black and a beautiful grey color as well.

I love this grey piece as well:

Wouldn’t that be lovely in a kitchen, filled with white serving dishes? Just beautiful!

They have a HUGE selection of affordable chairs:

I spy one that would work great in my office, but I’m going to try to recover the chair I have first. If it’s a colossal fail, IKEA will be calling my name. :)

One of my next big projects is our master closet. It’s atrocious. Incredibly atrocious. I’m determined to get it organized for good, and when I saw these units, I knew they would be perfect:

Ohhh…I can just see all the organized goodness in my head, and it. will. be. mine.

Their lighting department is one of my favorite parts of the store. This glass lamp is so traditional and pretty:

But they have a selection of the coolest, most magical lighting as well:

I wish I had a funky space to use one in. Maybe the basement someday? That dandelion fixture is calling my name. So cool.

Because both Traci and I luuurve Ballard Designs, we took a quick trip out to their outlet store while we were in town (West Chester, Ohio):

It’s so fun to look through, but that’s what is was mostly – looking. :) The prices were higher than I remember, and still way out of our range.

There were a few decent buys:

That light is looks like a miniature version of my dining room light! So pretty!

We were digging ALL of these fixtures, especially that green glass:

We saw plenty of projects we could attempt on our own though. Traci found a real cutie she’s going to recreate. (It’s adorable!)

We thought this pillow could be an easy knock off, especially if you have a Silhouette machine!:

I’ve been looking for clip on drum shades for our kitchen light fixture forEVER, and when I saw these across the room, I may have knocked a few women out of the way to get to them:

OH MY, they would have been perfect. But even at the even at the outlet, they were $25 smackaroos each. That would be a smooth $125 for what I needed. SO not going to happen.

Anyone seen any clip on drum shades that cost around $25 for all FIVE? :)

There’s a few oddities here and there too – like this monogrammed pillow:

I have a feeling a new bride just realized what her monogram spelled out. Ha! ;)

And this little lady was…uhhh…interesting:

that's hot

We had a such a fun day! And both of us were so good too – we only found a few little items to take home.

I’ll show you some more of mine soon, but both Traci and I had to pick up this cutie from IKEA:

Only five bucks, and it’s going to look great in our guest room -- when it’s done. Someday. In about ten years. Or so. Around there.

On every lady date I ever go on, we always forget to take a picture together. But at the very last second we remembered to get one:

Uhhh…I think she was trying to kiss me in this one? Maybe.

We tried again and while trying to make our necks look good, we may have stretched a little too much:

This is the best we got, after five tries:

I think Traci’s looking at someone else, but at least we’re both smiling and our necks look good. ;)

This two hour trip to IKEA to hang with one of my best bloggy friends made my whole week! If you haven’t seen dear Traci’s blog, head on over. You’ll love it.

Here’s one of their latest projects, a mudroom redo:

Beneath My Heart

SWOON.

So, have you been to IKEA? Dreaming but never been? What’s your favorite purchase? Anyone have the closet units I’m drooling over?

I say IKEA is “cheap” and that’s may be the wrong term – every single item I’ve purchased (furniture and otherwise) has held up GREAT. What’s your experience been with their products?

May the IKEA force be with you.

P.S. Speaking of Ballard, I’m going to attempt a Ballard knock off this weekend. Seems like it’s going to be an easy one, but we all know what happens when I let those words escape my mouth. We’ll just see. :)

  1. Hey! I've used those wardrobes before, and LOVE them. They're sturdy, have survived several moves, etc. So worth it.
Although I swear by the Container Store shelving for closet makeovers. I know, it's pricey. And trust me, I'm a cheapskate. But that's one place where I think the dough is worth it. . . I do it and I'm only a renter.
But regardless, the Ikea wardrobes are awesome, and can be customized to work in so many spaces. Fun!!

  2. OOoooo, so jealous! I loved hanging with both of you at Blissdom and would've love to spend the day shopping with you. Love you both!

  3. I love, love, love IKEA. And the meatballs are my weakness. I love everything I have bought from there. Did you check out the As-Is section? I have 2 of the skinny PAX units with mirrored doors, 10 baskets, some shelves and some plastic drawers...I tell you all of this because I got mine off Craigslist for $140!!! ALL OF THAT! They had already taken it down, we put it back together and it is awesome!! I had the thought of leaving the doors off and putting them in our closet, but they are the extra tall, our closet isn't terribly large and hubby shot down the suggestion of building them inside the closet! LOL!

  4. Love Ikea. So much of our stuff is from there and you're right, it's held up beautifully. Your console table is on my list when we have more space.

  5. I adore Ballard Designs and wish we had a store or an outlet in Chicago! We do have Ikea but the lines are always so long and the checkout process so slow that I've never actually purchased anything. Wish you could order online.
    Love your blog :)

  6. Oh how I adore Ikea. Like you, ours is 2 hours away so paying them a visit is a real treat. We have a love affair with the Expedit series. I think we have one in practically every room (not quite although the 6 or so pieces we have had made appearances in every room for sure). My favorite use was as a sofa table that crossed as toy storage and now I have a small 4 shelf one that houses mags on the top 2 shelves and shoe storage for the kids shoes on the bottom. When you look at it you would never know that that is where we keep the kids shoes.

  7. I'm feeling an IKEA trip coming on... thanks for the inspiration! The thing I love about IKEA is that my husband is just as inspired as I am... rarely do we enjoy shopping together so much... though taking a gal pal like you did is even better!

  8. I've come to the conclusion that Ikea is GREAT for little things... like decorative trinkets or wall art.. even kitchen utensils or textiles... but not for furniture. I have their 'ektorp' sectional sofa and a bookshelf. I've had the sofa for about 5 years and the thing looks like it's been through hell and back... when all it's done is sit in my living room. The frame snapped when my husband sat on it one night (he's a skinny guy! under 200lbs!) and is being held up by a stack of phonebooks and its slipcover is a complete 'stain magnet'. The cushions are also lumpy and misshapen and constantly slide about 6" out from the frame. Did I mention that it's just my husband and I? We don't even have kids!

The bookshelf we've had for less than 3 years and it leans to the right...way to the right. I've tried to tighten it up many a time... but all it wants to do is lean.

I do not recommend buying their furniture unless you are using it as 'temporary' pieces to fill a rental. You're so much better off spending the extra money to get quality stuff you won't have to replace every few years.

  11. Ohh my bestie and I went today with five kids in tow but still had an amazing trip. I too have sa-wooned over that dandelion light on the last 4 of my trips. I'm trying to work up the courage to buy something so whimsical for my more traditional/antiquey home but i feel like it might just be the bit of flair I need! I did buy some fun fabric, frames and glassware there today along with Swedish meatballs. :)

  12. I didn't know it was the Cinci Ikea you were visiting!! That's only two hours away from me too.... I was just down there a few weeks ago. LOVE IT.
Maybe one day I'll bump into you there (**jumping up and down, crossing fingers**) ;D

  13. Would you be jealous if I told you I live 3 1/2 blocks away from IKEA? Yes...it's true. Living in a big city has it's perks! It's actually 4 1/2 blocks if you want to park! But, I go to IKEA probably a couple times a month. I always laugh seeing the poor people there with no bags carrying all their stuff in their arms to the car! I have a ton of stuff from there and love it all! Just bought some cool storage containers for my pantry there a month ago. See:

    http://organizingmadefun.blogspot.com/2011/03/how-i-organize-my-kitchen-pantry.html

If you lived closer, I'd take you there, too! It IS a wonderful place! Make sure you get their Swedish pancake mix next time - SUPER yummy! My kids LOVE, LOVE, LOVE it!

  14. Hi Sarah, Love your blog and have been addicted to it ever since I found it about a month ago!! This is my first 'comment'. Ikea rocks! There's not much there I don't like. And I was happy to see the first pic you had was of my lovely cushion. Love it!! I was drooling over it for about a year or so, $30 here in Canada. And well, I'm a total cheap-skate and NEVER pay full price for anything, so I never bought it, just looked longingly as I walked by. Well for Christmas my stepdaughter and her mom, knowing how much I wanted it, got for me. I was soo happy and touched that they (meaning ex wife, whom I'm friends with) remembered how much I loved it. I think I teared up when I opened it. It looks gorgeous on my couch! Anyhoo, I totally get your giddyness about Ikea. What a great store!

I don't know where you're coming from (I'm from Central Ohio), but I bet you'd love the Pottery Barn outlet in Jeffersonville (I-71). :)

  19. I went from living 20 minutes from IKEA to 3 hours away. Now I have to really really want something in order to make a trip. Which is pretty much all the time. ;) my craft room is almost entirely made up in the Expedit bookcases/tables, the Markor stuff in my daughters room, and I just bought the Hemnes dresser for my hallway. Of course there are the baskets and glassware. Love it all! I wish I had a space for that Hemnes console table. Looks like you had a great day. ;)

  20. What a fun trip!! When I lived in Phoenix I was super close to Ikea. In fact, that's what sold me on moving there when my husband and I visited for a job interview. We were driving on the interstate and I spotted the lovely blue and yellow sign and literally shrieked "IKEA!!!" Hubby totally freaked out and thought I was yelling because a car was coming toward us. Good times...

Anyway, we purchased an Ektorp sectional sofa and it has held up amazingly well. That was our biggest purchase. We bought a ton of other stuff there. It's pretty much the best place in the whole world. :)

  21. We are lucky enough to have an Ikea in our town, only 10 minutes away! We go often and it's always a treat. They also have great cinnamon buns there! We are moving soon to a new house we are renovating and turning a tiny bedroom next to the master bedroom into a dressing room. We bought all Pax closets for it and they're going up this week-end. Can't wait to see them all up! I'll try to blog about it.

  22. I love IKEA!
The closest one to me is a little over 4 hrs away but I am going to Utah (8hrs away) with my dear friend tomorrow and we have a DATE with Ikea! I can hardly wait!

We also bought our living room furniture from there and I have those very pillows you have pictured.

As for the durability of their items... we bought our daughter the Billy bookcase in 1994 and it's still being used in her room! I'd say that's pretty darn durable!

    Have a great day.

  28. Since IKEA is four hours away from me, I am going to need a u-haul the next time we visit. I keep printing out things I want from there and now I have quite the stack! I love unique and quirky pieces but IKEA rocks for some good decor items and base pieces that are well made but not expensive. Plus, I just swoon over a good deal!

  29. IKEA is 4 hours from us, but just bought that very pillow last week. I think it's great! The pillow inserts are also a good deal. You can always get a good deal at IKEA.

  32. How fun! I love Ikea. It was great for my fiance and I to have a place like that to buy furniture from when we first moved in together because it was super affordable and had that mod look that we went for. Both our bed and entertainment center have held up perfectly with no complaints. We are so happy with our purchases there, and we are excited to go back for a coffee table within the next couple of months!

This was such a fun blog post to read! :)

  36. I've never been to an IKEA. They don't have one in my area. Now I see what I've been missing! My usual purchasing areas have been thrift stores and auctions.

  37. IKEA is one of my favorite stores on the planet. I always get in trouble when I describe anything as "cheap" (unless it really is cheaply made). "Inexpensive" is what I am told I should say :) But yes, IKEA is incredibly inexpensive and amazing and when we bought our new house I made a trip there with my mother in law and basically went crazy buying furniture, curtains, pillows... they are amazing.

  38. A comment on those closet organizers . . . I used them in my previous home and loved them until the dust started collecting and realized I was going to have to dust the shelves in my closet! Hello - I HATE to dust and my closet? I love the way they look but didn't like the maintenance.

    ReplyDelete
  39. I looooove me some IKEA!!! We have one just 45 minutes North, and I try to go every few months to play. ;) My oldest actually loves the play area, and my youngest is a good shopper, so it works out.

I've posted about IKEA several times, and I always wonder if my readers get tired of it, but I get tons of comments on those posts...so people must share the IKEA love. ;)

For me, the best part is walking through the "apartments" and seeing how the store has the rooms arranged. My girlfriends and I have a blast doing that and taking pictures. :)

My hubs is not a huge fan of IKEA b/c he's into very traditional, dovetailed, real solid wood, blah blah...which means we almost never get big new furniture pieces b/c we can't afford what he wants. :s Boo!! I've been happy with most of the IKEA pieces I've purchased, although the sideboard in my kitchen is starting to wear some....

I just LOVED reading your post today - I felt like I was living vicariously through you and Traci :) Today I'm visiting my parents and there's an IKEA nearby - yipee! and it's newly renovated!! I love IKEA's organizational and house wear items. Traci - I just LOVED your mudroom/laundry room. It's given me some really good ideas for mine :))

  50. I also love IKEA. I have paid for several employees' salaries there. ;-) However, I must say that you may be in for a disappointment regarding one of your purchases. I also loved the alarm clock you pictured, and I purchases 3 a couple of years ago. The things tick SO.DARN.LOUD. that I had to toss them. My family and guests were going nuts with them ticking. It was like an Edgar Allan Poe torture story. Good luck with yours - maybe they fixed the tick-tock to be quieter?

  51. My husband and I got married the summer after he graduated college and before my final year. With him on his first job and me still in school we were broke, broke, broke! Thankfully there was an IKEA by our house. We spent $300 (a rather large sum to us at the time but great for what we bought) and were able to get two dressers, two desks, a wardrobe, coffee table, and two side tables!!! Some items were on clearance in the "as is" room but most of it was just really well priced. Now, 7 years later, we are still using some of the pieces. We have also furnished our nursery entirely from IKEA and love the look we have. Yep, we LOVE IKEA!

Oh, and insider tip, a half hour before the store opens each morning, the restaurant opens and serves coffee for FREE! And breakfast is only $.99 and was pretty delicious!

  52. I love Ikea too! I loved this post because it felt like you were reading my mind... I have that pillow, and one of those throws and I have also been wishing I had a more modern room to use one of those funky light fixtures. 53. I love Ikea and alot of our house is furnished in their products from the Tundra laminate flooring, Expedite bookcase, office table, Henriksdal chairs, Hemnes upholstered bench and the ever famous Billy bookcase. All of it has held up really well and you can find alot of great deals in the As-Is section. I especially like it when out of the blue my store has the As-Is section for an additional 50% off! The only product we've had issues with are the Lack shelves. Even though we installed them into studs they sagged terribly!

After re-reading my comment, how sad is it that I know the Swedish names of my Ikea 'stuff'? :-P

  66. oh, how i LOVE ikea! i also buy throw pillows every time i go to give a room a fresh, different touch with seasons. i also love their rugs! they have the BEST prices so that its not a MAJOR commitment if you want to re-decorate your room in a few months. haha.

i have never bought furniture there. my brother had his wife purchased a couch there that they thought was normal size... and when they got home, they realized it is dwarfed. (it works perfect in the babys room now, though!) i didnt know if they accidently bought a childs couch, or if all the furniture seemed to be small? what is your opinion?

i am in serious need of some tables (literally for every room of the house) and absolutely love the hemnes sofa table you guys have... is it on the small side too? i may have to be getting one of these babies. im just so hesitant with the furniture and bigger purchases! please let me know your opinions!!

  67. I'm glad I'm not the only one that gets giddy with excitment while IKEA shopping, I only get to go once in a while as we have to take a trip across the sea to france, but its such a big deal to spend a whole day setting in IKEA room sets, I could just move into one!

Thanks for the IKEA hit for us addicts! :)

  68. Ok, this is just WRONG, just wrong to make us all jealous like this. And no, I'm a little sad that I missed IKEA, but more sad that I missed a day with two of my faves. :) What fun...thanks for sharing. I love fun posts like this.

P.S. Can you believe I have NEVER been to IKEA yet. Now that is wrong.

  69. I can't get enough of Ikea either! I just grabbed 4 Hendriksdal chairs for my dining set. They're a great, basic Parsons chair. Love them! Not to mention, they were only $60 a piece

  70. I was at IKEA about a month ago and bought the embroidered pillows you have at the beginning of your post. LOVE THEM. Also, I have been looking for drum shades for my chandelier. I don't think they exist. I found some on ETSY but they were over $100.00 for 6 and I need 8. Not going to happen. I have looked and looked online and just can't find anything affordable. I'll let you know if I ever do. I live in Ohio by the way. Did you go the IKEA by Cincinnati? ~Ann

  71. I love their kitchen section! Also their baskets. I can not get enough of the little storage baskets!

    ReplyDelete
  72. I love going to IKEA too (although I'll admit, all the people and their sometimes screaming children drive me a little to the edge - but only when the kids scream), but it's 5 hours away. Such a tease!

    ReplyDelete
  73. I just want to mention that I found some really cute clip-on drum shades for my kitchen table chandelier at Stein Mart a couple weeks ago. They're green with a little white lattice design. They had a whole bunch, though. They were in the home markdown section. And guess how much they were? $1.94 - each! They look great too. You may want to check there.

  74. Okay, I am officially jealous. Traci is such fun to hang with; you're such fun to hang with. So the two of you together!?!

Just for future reference, my neck photographs pretty well. So I'd fit in just fine. :)

  76. i LOVE ikea! i love the way it smells and how after you get home and unload everything your house smells like the store. okay - maybe that was a little too personal. lol! i have those floral/stripe pillows and i LURVE them. they are such a fun pop of color! :) looks like yall had a great time!

    ReplyDelete
  77. Do you have an Old Time Pottery nearby? I bought 5 tan muslin drum shades from there for my chandelier for $4 each. Yup, $20 total! They always have a hodge podge of styles over near the lamps.

  78. My only trips to IKEA have been to take a group of inner-city kids to place hide-and-go-seek in the giant warehouse!! I worked in a ministry that provided the kids with fun Friday night activities (instead of nights that might have involved drugs or alcohol), and IKEA hide-and-go-seek was a favorite! Also a total gong show (I think your word for it is science fair?). So I've seen the glory of it, but never had the time to actually shop! :)

    ReplyDelete
  79. Oooh, such good finds! I need to go to IKEA so bad, but have been putting it off b/c there is so much that I want to grab, that I need extra time and money! Love that store!

    ReplyDelete
  80. LOVE it. I'm headed to the same IKEA (West Chester, OH) tomorrow & can't wait! We just bought our first house & are fixing it up, so IKEA is much needed. :) I guess we live in the same neck of the woods maybe? Anyway, your post got me even more excited for the weekend's shopping trip. Thanks!

  81. I wish I knew you were going, I would have asked you to pick me up a lampshade. I bought an adorable lamp base there and didn't realize a regular shade wouldn't fit it.... ugh! I love Traci's blog. My mudroom is the same color scheme, and I'm tempted to paint my door black like she did. Glad you had fun :)

  82. I love Ikea too. We are in between two of them- both about 30-40min away so we go quite often. They really have great stuff for improving storage especially in small homes- which I've loved since our townhome is only 900sqft. We bought some pax wardrobes for our small bedroom and it ended up giving us way more storage than the two closets in the master bedroom. We lucked out and found doors in the as is section (nothing was even wrong with them, I guess they just had too many or something?) for $10 a piece. I've found a lot of great stuff in the as-is like an expedit huge entertainment center for $50 in the box (the bottom of it had a dent and you can't see it).

  83. I took those fleece blankets and cut them into strips to make scarves for kiddos in need this winter! They are super inexpensive and make the cutest scarves!

  84. I just made my first trip to IKEA this week while in Florida on vacation. I was so excited to actually make it to a store. I wasn't disappointed. We bought a few things but had to discriminate because we were flying. Sure wish we had one near Kansas City or St. Louis even. PLEASE COME. Best buy - two pair of while curtain panels for spring/summer for $29.98. Can't buy the fabric for that. Love them.

  85. I love IKEA! Mine is about 10 minutes away from my house :D. Bought many items there and they have held up very well. I especially love the discount center they have!

  86. i ADORE ikea!!! I have so much stuff from there that I can't even tell you about it all! The closest one to me is in Sacramento. Lucky for me Hubs likes it almost as well as me;) We bought the Hemnes bed frame and the long dresser. Love both of them!!! we bought our matress from them too and We love it!!! I have the black square dishes from there and they hold up great besides when i smash them on the floor;) i love all the kitchen stuff, utensils, towels, etc.

the big bundle of 'twigs' is next on my list:) i too have found some stunning deals in the discount section!!! ALWAYS check it out before you leave;) and the cinnamon buns. TO DIE FOR. honest. so so good!!!

  87. I'm obsessed with Hemnes, I literally want every black / brown piece, I do love the grey too.

I love Ikea, try not to go too often cause I'll probably spend allllll the money lol

  89. I heart Ikea. I've been there twice this week already. LOL!

I have found that although their items are incredibly inexpensive, their aren't "cheap", but any means. They hold up well and look great.

  90. Way back when I was working, our company moved into a new office that was much bigger than where we came from. I furnished the entire new office with IKEA - right down to glass coffee mugs for client visits.

My nearest IKEA is about 3 hours away. I'm near Carson City, NV and the IKEA is in Sacramento, CA.

  91. I've never been but want to go so so badly! Their Butcher Block Counters have me swooning everytime I see them!

  92. So fun! I did the exact same trip with my mom and sis-n-law last Saturday. It is a two hour trip from us in Indy and I LOVE Ikea! Looks like you both had a ball! I just bought those cute pillows for my family room. Love them!

    ReplyDelete
  93. I've only been to our local Ikea once...got lost within two minutes! giggle. Looks like you had a fun day out. Hugs and happy spring!

  94. I love your blog. just visited from the little brown house's blogroll. i also love ikea. i thought since you like the dandelion lamp so much you mihgt like young house love. they used it in their bedroom. looks fantastic.

  95. Wow, that shopping trip seemed great! I've only seen ikea on-line and loved what I saw there. Now after seeing this post I need to find a store near me and go check it out in person.
    Happy Spring!!!

  96. I've never been but I AM DYING to go! I just know that I need at least one Expedit piece! And maybe something like your sofa table

    ReplyDelete
  97. say it with me now:

    aaaaah-keeey-aaahhhhhh

I adore the place! Sadly the nearest IKEA is over 4 hours away, but thankfully its just 45 minutes from my parents' house so I go when I go visit them. Its like decorating Disney World!

So far I just have a couple of pieces (like the desk attached to the cubed bookcase in the black - forget the name), but I have a bedroom plan that I hope to get going on soon that includes new furniture from IKEA (the Hemnes dressers in white WILL BE MINE!).

Glad you had a blast. I got giddy just readying your post!

    ReplyDelete
  98. I have come to beleive Ikea is the official fifth food group in my mind..:)

    ReplyDelete
  99. I live about 7 minutes from the West Chester Ikea that you visited! I probably don't appreciate it as much as I should. I agree that Ballard's is pricey and Frontgate (next door) is even worse. The fact that you can't return things makes it hard to commit to buying something. Those drum shades are very nice. Perhaps you can DIY them?

    ReplyDelete
  100. Wow! What a great post! I haven't been to IKEA lately and didn't realize what great new things they have! Gotta go! I love that mudroom makeover - I may steal that beadboard idea for the ceiling!

  101. I am anxiously waiting to go the end of April. We live 6 HOURS away and I am just dieing to get back there!! I am trying to remodel my kitchen and have decided that it will be an Ikea kitchen.

  102. You two look like you had a blast. I smiled at the picture's and yes your necks look good. LOL

  103. looks like it was a fun trip!! - IKEA is always in my mind - while I would love to buy some furniture -theres is always stylish & very well made. I remember I was in high school when I bought my first piece if IKEA firniture & it moved with me numerous times - it always held up!!! THe price & quality is perfect for my family!! - I got to my Philly store any chance I get. Last trip I got a cooking pot - so far loving that too.

  104. I like ikea too!

Have you thought about making your own drum shades? Then attaching with the clip on adapter (this one is for 10) http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000MSDKF2/ref=pd_lpo_k2_dp_sr_2?pf_rd_p=486539851&pf_rd_s=lpo-top-stripe-1&pf_rd_t=201&pf_rd_i=B002UK5NNC&pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_r=0RAN6D70FR464TQ2MQFE

  106. LOVE Ikea! My life changed when Ikea opened up in Minnesota in 2004, I believe! I've bought lamps, rugs, coffeetables, decorative vases, bamboo, office organizers, baskets..I have a weakness for the meatballs as well and always have an ice cream cone on the way out. LOVE the As-Is section, have found various covers there (couch covers, ottoman covers, etc.) and have repurposed them. I've also bought bedding. I may not currently be using everything as I consistently switch things around seasonally..or just when I feel like it. But everything has held up and I LOVE it all!!

    ReplyDelete
  107. I got my clip on shades at Steinmart for exactly five dollars each and they look EXACTLY like Ballard Design.

    ReplyDelete
  108. My parents and my husband's parents both live about 10 minutes from an Ikea. It was awesome when we still lived in the area; we'd go there just for a cinnamon roll. Now we live 7 hours from that Ikea and two hours from the nearest Ikea. It's such a bummer because I had gotten used to going there for anything I needed!

    ReplyDelete
  109. Not drum-shaped, but I found chandelier shades in an Empire style at Joann Fabrics. You peel off the paper on the outside, and there is adhesive underneath to stick on your fabric. also comes with a template to cut out the fabric.

    Keep up the great work!

  114. Hi, i love looking at your blog. i was very surprised to see you taking pictures at the store i work at! ;-) I do work part time at that Ballard Designs Outlet. you missed the 75% off sale we had on lamp shade. And Friday we had an unadvertised 50% off storewide sale. some things are pricey, b/c i to furnish on a budget - which is why i started working at Ballard - I work for the discount!! My husband had mixed feelings at the idea.

i hope you signed up for the Ballard Designs outlet email- it is a once a week email that lets you know what the sales are for that week.

Okay enough of the sales pitch. i did love that sofa table you showed from ikea, i might have to go check that out! Say hi to me that next time you are there!

  115. I thought your blog was funny. My hubby, some good friends and I went to a concert last weekend. I knew it was NW of Chicago. I kept asking if this was by IKEA and if we could go earlier to stop there. My hubby said no. (He knew better he is a truck driver, he was just putting me off, he has no desire to go to IKEA) Imagine my surprise as we were driving right by Ikea and I could not stop!!!! I screamed! Unfortunately for my friend he did not understand my angst and swerved to miss a car he thought was going to hit us (there was no car and luckily no car next to us). I felt bad that I almost caused an accident over screaming for IKEA. I am sure only all of you could understand I was the victim here. My freind forgave my, but I did shave a few years off of his life. It was toooooo funny!

  116. I didn't know that there's a Ballard outlet in West Chester! I think a trip to Cincy is in my future very soon.

  117. IKEA does it for me too. I have two within 40 minutes of me so I try to go pretty frequently (never enough though!).
My MIL has made. scarves out of the IKEA fleece throws, she can get a lot out of one throw!
We redid my teen's room last summer and she has all those fabulous closet systems AND that PB-esque pillow AND that clock you bought!

  121. When my daughter was little, we lived in Maine but would visit home in VA often. There are quite a few Ikeas between VA and ME! We would hit one every trip back there. So when she was about 18 mos, we taught her to raise her arms and say "aaaaaaaaaaawwwwwww!" like she'd just happened across heaven. When she was about 2.5, she did it for Best Buy. Those darn stores with blue signs and yellow letters!

I was just at Ikea about 2 weeks ago and plan on going back to the one in Orlando when we visit the mouse in a few weeks. Plus, meetballs for dinner sure beats dinner in the park!

I've also been eyeing that pillow! I want it, the red Ektorp couch and some blue and white striped chairs. Oh, they will look absolutely LOVERLY since my husband is in the Navy and we have TONS of red white and blue hanging around. I don't want to do "americana" but would love a tasteful red, white and blue room to match all our homecoming pictures and all his navy stuff!

  125. I've had your blog and traci's blog up all day. my hubby and I are doing board and batten in the mud/laundry room and I keep bringing up stuff from both blogs to show him. My bestie/SIL and I have been talking about going to Ikea for ages and this saturday we are making the 3 hour trek to the only one close to us, west chester ohio :-) can't wait to check it out and I'm drooling over those pillows, they are exactly what I was looking for. I too have been looking for little drum shades....maybe we can talk Ikea into selling them cheaper :-)
