Is this your dream house?

Hey hey! How are ya? I’ve been dealing with some computer problems this morning, hence the late post. I thought those weren’t supposed to happen on a Mac?? ;)

Anyhoo, the other day I caught the last few minutes of the HGTV dream house special and was pleasantly surprised with the bits I saw. Every year there are definitely parts I love and some I not-so-love. I found a little of both when I went to the site to see more of the house.

Have you seen it yet? I’d love to hear your thoughts too!

It’s absolutely beautiful from the outside, looks like a tree house to me:

HGTV dream home 2013

The front porch is amazing, and those shingles look like cedar but are really made of PVC:

HGTV dream house 2013

Wild huh?

And you KNOW I love that front door with the glass! (We discussed the potential for glass in our front door in here – so many of you had opinions on that!)

I love that they created a little relaxing nook in the entry here:

HGTV dream house

I don’t imagine I would lay down for a nap in the foyer, but whatever, it’s cute! ;)

I have mixed thoughts on the family room space:

I LOVE the tall ceilings, all the windows, the floors!

But the fireplace feels out of place to me with the contemporary look and I’m not a fan of the sofa fabric…like, at all:

HGTV dream house 2013

It just looks so heavy and out of place to me for this room. I expected something a bit lighter. And there is a TON of green in this house. Lots. Some pops of a few more colors would be beautiful!

I LOVE this console, with it’s paneled glass doors:

HGTV dream house 2013

Love the simple accessorizing too – I’m kind of obsessed with that huge crane. Duck?

But take a look at this photo – is it me or are there two of those consoles in this pic?:

HGTV dream home 2013

Am I losing it? There’s one in one pic, two in another right? Oh well, I love them both. ;)

The kitchen I’m not digging as much as some of the other spaces. This house looks like it would have such a lovely, traditional kitchen, and this one leans more modern -- it surprised me (maybe that’s the point!):HGTV dream home 2013

I love the base cabinets, even love the color. And I’m a fan of painted ceilings (I’ve painted most of ours, the blue one in my office is my fave), but that saturated green feels SO heavy to me:

HGTV dream house 2013

I do love that they used the open shelving in what would be an awkward spot for cabinets next to the fridge!

The dining area was more of the same tones – I think a different color for the chairs would be lovely but I love those rattan ones at the ends of the table! I dig the lights too:

HGTV dream house 2013

Love that rug too!

The powder room showcases how the green continues through the house:

HGTV dream house 2013

I guess I’m just surprised – I expected a bit lighter color palette for a “beachy” type of home like this.

The bunk room was more along the lines of what I expected -- I LOVE the combo of blues and green:

HGTV dream home 2013

How FUN!

This room was more serene and more monotone:

HGTV dream house 2013

I wonder if they just put the dining room rug in here for the shot? ;) Although this one looks like it has some more green to it.

I thought the guest room was just lovely:

HGTV dream home 2013

The posters on that bed are amazing!

I’m obsessed with that deep blue/grey color on the armoire right now:

HGTV dream house 2013

It’s similar to what I used on the backs of our built ins.

The rafters in the loft are AMAZING:

HGTV dream house 2013

And I love that deep blue color on the walls!

I think my favorite room in the house is the master bedroom:

HGTV dream house 2013

I’m toying around with replacing our four poster bed and this makes me rethink it.

Love the rug and the pattern on this chair too:

HGTV dream house 2013

I also like that the two sides of the bed aren’t identical. There’s a small dresser on one side and a desk on the other:

HGTV dream house 2013

Really love that! This year I’m going to try to to break of out of my need to have everything symmetrical – it hurts me a little but I want to try. :)

There were a few more little things that I noticed in the house as well. This bright green vanity in a light blue bathroom was one:

HGTV dream house 2013

Love that they installed the vanity lights right into the molding around the mirror in that bathroom and this one:

HGTV dream house 2013

I like the addition of a towel rod at the end of the cabinets in the dining area:

HGTV dream house 2013

It’s the little things for sure. :)

I adore the fluffy blooms on this plant!:

HGTV dream house 2013

They called it a pandanus – I don’t think I’ve heard of this or seen one before!

I love that they used a long floating shelf in place of a console or dresser in a hallway:

HGTV dream house 2013

If you don’t have enough room for a piece of furniture, this would be a great option! My only question would be how do you hide the cords?? ;)

The pantry wasn’t your typical food closet, but I love how they made skirts out of some fun fabric to hide the stuff underneath:

HGTV dream house 2013

And really? A wine fridge in the pantry wouldn’t suck. ;)

I was so taken with these pretty ice cream cups in there too:

HGTV dream house 2013

Could be because I could eat a waffle cone for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Could just be cause they’re cute. ;)

What do you think of this year’s dream home? Do you enter every year? I stopped trying a few years back. And then every year when they announce the winner I get a tad excited that maybe it could be me and remember I never entered. Dang. ;)

All photos were taken from the HGTV site here and you can see details about paint colors and the products there too.

**Don’t forget the first Before and After Party of 2013 will be this Monday! I’ll be back to DIY and normal posting next week! Have a great weekend!

  1. Yes that IS my dream house. Of course all of HGTV's Dream Homes are my dream homes, I'd take any of them. I don't think I've ever missed a day of entering since they started giving them away. What is this one 15? More? Have a great day Sarah!

  2. I agree with you on a lot of your observations. The overall style of the house just isn't me though.

I do agree that the master bedroom is lovely.

On your console question - if you look closely, it is just the angle of the camera, making the piece look longer. I know because I counted the glass panels on both pictures, and they are the same! It looks like there are 4 doors/windowed panels, or whatever they are, in both pictures.

  3. I don't like skirted cabinets. It makes me think that someone cheaped out on getting a real cabinet door. lol.

I only entered the HGTV Dream House when it was in New Mexico. I was being realistic because it was closer to where we live. :) Other than that, I never enter. I'm kinda cheesed at HGTV. When will the design shows come back?!

  4. I love the house! Like everyone else, I've been signing up daily, telling myself and my husband, THIS IS OUR YEAR to win! Ha :) He just shakes his head!

  6. I actually prefer the decor of the guest room over the master! And I can't get on board with the no upper cabinets in the main part of the kitchen. I hope that trend goes out pretty fast! But it is a beautiful home of course.

  7. I like the house...but I'm nuts about the guest room!

  8. I love all their dream homes, especially when they're located just a few short hours where I currently live :)

  9. the "crane" duck thing is actually a SWAN i think!

also, LOVE the guest room so much. oh my gosh.

i dont love ALL the green...and i especially dont LOVE the kitchen. overall its cute though!

  10. I love the outside of the house but not much on the inside, the kitchen is way too contemporary for me, I did not like the pantry at all, I love walk in pantries that one was a disappointment, wasn't a fan of all the green either. I did like the bedrooms though. Like you I didn't like the fabric sofa. I don't enter to win these homes I read a few of the previous winners had a hard time paying the taxes on the properties so to me it's not worth it, you win it then can't afford to keep it, many of the past winners had to sell the properties because they couldn't afford the taxes etc.

  11. Oh, my. I always love to look at The Dream Homes, even if I don't actually love all the elements themselves. I really am not a fan of this kitchen and I'm not a superfan of the bright greens used, but man... I wouldn't turn down a chance to live there!

  12. I grew up vacationing at Kiawah island as a kid and even honeymooned there as well. I love it there and would love to go back. Sadly, though we are on the opposite coast now and it's easier to get to Hawaii than it is to SC. But I love it. And of course, since I love the location, the house is amazing too! I won't be sad when I win it!

    ReplyDelete
  13. Not a fan of this one like I have been some of the others. The kitchen I didn't like at all. Just my personal taste. Hugs, marty

  14. Honestly, there may be more I dislike than I like this time, but I wouldn't complain if it were mine. :)

I don't think you're losing it, I see two consoles, too. Someone mentioned counting the panels. I did, and I still see two! :)

    ReplyDelete
  15. i thought the kitchen fell short on this one and way too much green evrywhere...there are good things too..the bathrooms were all really great...I liked the guest room color palette the best....I wouldn't turn it down...

    ReplyDelete
  16. With 5 little kids this is certainly NOT my dream home . . . way too much stuff to get their hands on. The kitchen is really lacking, but it's a very nice home.

    ReplyDelete
  17. It's a nice home...but I just don't love it. It looks too "model home-ish" for me.

    ReplyDelete
  18. My husband would love it for the location, near one of the best golf courses in the US. I love the outside and some of the room, but I too am not crazy about the kitchen nor the green color throughout the home.

    ReplyDelete
  19. I agree with you about a little too much grean, especially think the green dining chairs were a bit over kill. But hey, I would take that house in a heart beat if I won it!

    ReplyDelete
  20. I agree with you on everything. The living space and Kitchen do not seem to go with the style of the bedrooms, which is more to my preference. And too much of that green! But there is only one console in the second picture. I counted the panes of glass. I think it's just been stretched to make the space look bigger.

  21. I just set a reminder on my phone to watch the special in the morning -- really want to see it real time, ya know? The kitchen isn't my favorite, and it's a whole lotta green, but it's still a gorgeous home! I wouldn't say "no" if they called me and told me I'd won. ;-)
    Happy New Year, Sarah!

  22. I agree, when I saw that kitchen I was like WHAT!! And the fireplace does nothing for me. Too contemporary for the look on the outside.

    ReplyDelete
  23. I've always loved the HGTV dream homes, but this one I'm not too crazy about. Waaay too much green and too modern for me. I think the kitchen is awful. I do like the family room though and those cool rafters.

    ReplyDelete
  24. As you stated, the house has a lot of contemporary in the decorating and I am not a fan of that either. Also, the green(even though a little different)takes me back to the 70's(yucky) and there is way too much of that color. I kind of like the aqua touches in some rooms. I don't care for the rooms for kids, but the guest room is my favorite and master is next. I did enter to win but will only do it once. Living in SC most of my life I can say the coast is beautiful. Hope whoever wins has a ton of cash because the taxes will be extreme!

    ReplyDelete
  25. I love everything except the kitchen. I like contemporary, but just not that kitchen. It's kind of strange to have that very cottage guest room and such a contemporary look in the kitchen. It doesn't mesh well. I still love the rest of it!

    ReplyDelete
  26. Whoa - lots of green! But the guest bedroom, the master bedroom, and that loft - absolutely gorgeous!! Ha and I love ho you caught the two consoles and the rug in two different rooms. Good eye! (Reminda me of Brian Regan's skit (good eye, Brian, good eye!) haha

    ReplyDelete
  27. Its one console table. Three legs in the first price, three legs in the second.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Outside I like...inside was a total let down. Overall score = ick.

    ReplyDelete
  29. my dream house, i love the style of your house its very inviting and the place is so awesome..

    ReplyDelete
  30. Totally agree with all of your observations, especially about the kitchen. I was so sad to see a contemporary/modern design in there instead of a beachy cottage vibe. I live in SC so it would be super tempting, but I think I would choose the cash option if I won- you can choose either the house or its cash equivalent!

    ReplyDelete
  31. Beautiful house. NOT my dream one though . Mine is floor to cieling windows with an ocean view ..If I was talking DREAM house and all... : ) loved it though .........HUGS

    ReplyDelete
  32. U R kidding me right??? Of course it's mine! LOL Now I just gotta get them to give it to me. I've done my part...entering twice a day. I really love the setting most of all. As for the color of the year, I want to know who voted for emerald green...not a big fan! Now everyone thinks that everything has to be green. So If you have any pull with the folks at HGTV, please tell them that another Indy girl is waiting on that call for them to tell me it's mine. ;-)

    ReplyDelete
  33. There's only one cabinet if you count the glass panels. What a weird picture though!

Don't give up symmetry!!! It's restful and the eye looks for it. Maybe just learn how to use similar-in-weight but not exACTly identical objects. If you really wanna get rowdy (: .

    ReplyDelete
  34. I really love the guest bedroom -- that room feels the most balanced to me. But that kitchen -- I am disappointed! I would have loved to see a more traditional kitchen, too. Or at least a bit more coastal, I suppose.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Think I'm agreeing with you about the darker muddy green - it's a little heavy for what I thought would be a lighter interior also.

As for the console in the living room: I stared at both photos for about 5 minutes and realized they must have used a fish eye lense to give depth to the 2nd shot - it's the same console, just stretched out.

    ReplyDelete
  36. I agree with most of our observations as well. My HGTV dream home was the one in Sonoma, California. I still dream about that house! I do love the guest room in this house, though. The gray and blue is divine!

    ReplyDelete
  37. There are definitely great aspects in each room. Overall it's a little too much color for me in some of the rooms. I like soft, quiet neutrals. But if I won it, I'd probably be a painting fool! Haha! :-) Now that would be a dream: win a house!

    ReplyDelete
  38. Like you, I love much of it, particularly the bedrooms and loft. But the kitchen is a disappointment and it would be nice to see other colors introduced. I'd still gladly take the house though :)

    ReplyDelete
  39. Not my dream home, some of those colors and patterns are horrid. And that kitchen... so so sad. But then I am a simple kind of decorator, not in to modern lines, all these trendy patterns or lots of bright colors. I did like the blue bathroom with that green vanity, though. The guest room, with the white four-poster bed and the master bedroom are more my speed and they were both lovely. Guess that means I won't enter to win, I will leave that to those who truly LOVE this house. :)

    ReplyDelete
  40. It's actually not one of my favorites they've done. I don't like the kitchen and dining room, and the bunk bed nook is really cute, but it's actually out in the upstairs hallway! What the heck are you supposed to do with that?

Oh well. The bedrooms were great, though!

    ReplyDelete
  41. Woah, green overload! I am a bit surprised with the main living rooms this year. I love, love, love the classic coastal style of the bedrooms but I am not into the modern style everywhere else. And that rug in the master, I NEED it!

    ReplyDelete
  42. I couldn't get past the giant potted plants ON the kitchen counter! what the?!

    ReplyDelete
  43. We had our poster bed FOREVER and I didn't think I wanted to give it up either. But, we went from a queen poster bed to a king bed and my bedroom looked SO much larger without the poster bed - even going to a bigger bed. I was honestly amazed at the difference! We got Paula Deen's Aunt Peggy's bed in a molasses finish and I love, love, love it! http://www.homefurnitureshowroom.com/products/view.aspx?sku=7638097&af=1530&cse=1530&gclid=CKGe78D70bQCFehDMgod_FUA8w

  44. Love the console too. . .and good catch on the picture! Love glass front doors. . .the green was a little much but the kitchen is a deal-breaker. Even if I *could* afford the house this year I would definitely say "no". . .thanks for putting this post together! It's like visiting with friends :)

  45. I have only entered (thrice a day, every day) to win for the home last year. This year the house really did nothing for me & I wasn't a fan of the location. I enjoyed your recap though. Btw - did you notice the return air vent in the bunk bed room? ~ Dee @deeconstructed.com

  46. I really loved the guest bedroom bed but its 2500 for a king so I guess I will keep dreaming !

  47. If you read the sweepstakes info, the prize is valued at $2million dollars. If you win it, you will owe $1million in taxes. Any idea how you are going to pay that? You'd have to sell the prize in order to afford the prize. They do give you $500K in the prize, but you will still be short another $500K. How many of you have that kind of cash hanging around?

Once you move into the home, supposing that you do eventually, how do you come up with the annual property taxes? Or upkeep?

The other option, is forgo the home, car and bonus $500,000 and just take $1mill in cash, which means you will only owe $500K in taxes, so you net $500K to take home.

Which do you think all those previous winners chose? Duh?

Nobody wins the house. It just gets sold.

But it is a nice dream, isn't it???

    ReplyDelete
  48. This Dream Home just isn't me. I can't get over that pantry is pretty over function. In a 2 million dollar house I want floor to ceiling storage for ingriedent type food. I think my small condo pantry has more concealed storage than the Dream Home :(

    ReplyDelete
  49. Wow. That looks like someone's version of a green home, not the HGTV Dream House. Oh well, they can't all be winners.

(Off topic - how do you get edges of your photos to have rounded corners? Thanks for any info)

    ReplyDelete
  50. My favorite rooms are the master and guest baths - and I'm thinking those urn/ginger-jar things under that floating shelf are a waste of space. I'm all about function over form lately. :)

I would totally take the house if I won! What mylifeinfocusblog doesn't consider is that if you win the house in January you have all year to sell it before you have to pay the taxes - so you sell before you owe, and you come out on top. No brainer.

    ReplyDelete
  51. I love your honesty in analyzing this home. I was surprised by the shades of green used - some good, some horrible (especially since I lived through the 70s!). In all, there are always tons of ideas to glean from the homes, and I love the way she shops the local, small stores bringing in local art and furnishings, but I would like to see a different approach next year with a new designer leading the way.

    ReplyDelete
  52. Oh that was fun, thanks. I'll have to go to their site to find out more.
Has there ever been a post winning or post purchase feature of one of the homes? It would be interesting to see how the owner repainted, or adapted things for everyday use. That is kind of fun to think about as I admire all the photos.
It makes me think of a tree house too. Swiss Family Robinson or something. :) I'm sure I would get tired of having to climb steps every day to get into my home, particularly w/groceries and such. I haven't gone to the site yet; maybe it is designed that way due to flooding.
Like other commenters, I was really drawn in with the first few photos, and then we see the kitchen. Hm. Not a style I care for, and based on the home's front door/entry, not what would be expected.
Ha, funny about the console; I think a camera lens stretched it. It still has only 3 legs.
I guess as others have said, it would be hard to 'afford' to win the house. Most would totally have to sell it, or take the cash. Taxes take the fun out of it!

  54. With a few changes in paint colors, I would love this as a vacation home. I wouldn't prefer a lot of the decor for everyday living, but for weekend getaways it would be lovely. The outside and the landscape are beautiful.

    Yes, I am entering. ;-)

    ReplyDelete
  55. I can understand what you are saying about all the green. But, with those huge beautiful windows and all of the green marsh outside I really think it works. Not a fan of the couches either, but I love everything else in that room. Especially that huge iron gate. I love the whole house. The only thing I don't like is the material they used in the pantry. I'm not a fan of that personally. I think with all the money they spent to build and design that house. They should have gone with chunk white storage with doors.

I always start to enter and then forget about it. This year I am going to do it everyday. If I ever won it I would take what I wanted from the house and sell it. I don't think I would like to live in the Carolinas Although, I hear it is beautiful. I just call California home.

Nice to see someone who noticed all the little things too. I noticed the console also.

    Happy New Year,
    Cathy

  57. I have a kitchen with no upper cabinets right now and it stinks. Even with awesome drawers in all the lower cabinets. That was the first thing that popped out to me about the kitchen, lol. But I love the blue bunk room, the trellis patterned rugs, all the windows! And especially the front door. That's the same door that's on my wishlist for my house.

  58. Love the exterior, and Kiawah Island is a cool place. However, I hate to be a debby downer, but I wasn't impressed with the interior of the HGTV dream home this year. Don't get me wrong, there are a lot of nice things, but I wasn't a fan of many of the colors (especially the green), and most of the decor feels very catalog to me. There are decorators who buy catalog pieces and mix them with vintage and upscale and create amazing rooms. Then there are decorators who buy all catalog pieces and the spaces seem a bit cheap. Maybe they all have to be catalog in this house because of the sponsors, etc. I get that. I just wish the whole place felt more real, less "plastic." Know what I mean?
