Do-It-Herself workshop at Home Depot

Hey all! I am so glad it’s Friday!! We had some ice accumulation here last night and I was hoping for a snow day for the kiddo, but we made due with a delay (and sleeping in). ;) I cannot wait for a weekend of relaxing and puttering around!
Last night I was honored to co-lead the Do-It-Herself workshop at a local Home Depot and let me tell you, I was SO impressed with how they put it together! The set up was just adorable – since this month’s project was Pinterest-inspired, they pulled ideas from there to create some fun vignettes.
This was a DIY workshop, and I will get to that more in a minute, but just loved how cute the set up was so I have to brag on them for that first. They pulled out their stock of outdoor furniture for the audience so it was comfy and colorful:
Brilliant idea!
The sign-in booth was just so cute – everything was made from pallets and wood they had at the store (hellooo Pinterest!!):
Don’t you love the pennants they made from scrapbook paper?
They had super cute bags with goodies for each attendee too:
I don’t know if you can see my apron there, but one of the staff members painted mine just for me and it is SO CUTE. She used colors from my blog and it is precious – I love it.
OK, I know I should be talking about the DIY, but the food table was amazing too:
More pennants, more pallet tables, and I LOVED the idea of lining the barrels with lawn bags and using them for the beverages. Seriously? So fun!
The workshop leader Janice did a great job of sharing the process of tiling a frame around a mirror. They had smaller ones there for people to try out, but this is a great idea for those basic builder mirrors so many of us have hanging in our bathrooms too.
These were my favorites of the night:
I was obsessed with that smaller one with the small tiles – it had such a pretty beachy vibe.
Janice shared a tip she uses for smaller projects like this that I would never have thought to do. She just puts on gloves and then smooshes the grout in between the tiles with her hands. Loved that – it’s messy no matter how you do it but that makes it even easier!
I think my favorite “tool” of the whole project was the tile setting mat – it’s just sticky stuff you put down instead of mortar. Way less mess and so much easier! (I’m Vanna Whiting it here):
I’m planning on using it in the laundry room so I’ll let you know how it works.
The ladies (and some gentleman) got to shop for their own materials as well – they had some beautiful mosaic tiles to pick from:
I found a perfect one for the basement bathroom, now I just need to decide where to put it. :)
It was a fun night and we had a great turn out, especially with the weather we had coming in. Hope everyone got home safe and sound!
Thanks to Janice for leading the workshop and Celeste for her help along the way and beautiful ideas for the set up:
Don’t forget – the workshops are offered every month on the third Thursday and are free to attend. Next month is how to install dimmers – one of my very favorite things to do in our house. It would be great to see how to do it first hand if you haven’t done one yourself. (Go here to find out more.)
It was an honor to work with everyone from Home Depot this month! To celebrate, they are giving me a $100 HD gift card to give away to one of you!
This giveaway is now closed.

I would do something in my master bath. Not sure what...but that's the room that needs help.
ReplyDeleteWhat a great mirror! I will have to check to see if they offer the same workshop series at the Home Depots in Canada. ;-)
ReplyDeleteI would like to jazz up my poor little pantry!! It is in for a workout this summer with the grandsons coming and I have so many ideas....
ReplyDeleteThank you,

I am in the process of buying my first home so I am sure there will be tons of ways I could use the gift card including buying some tiles to outline the mirror!
ReplyDeleteI'd love to use it to help remodel my kitchen.
ReplyDeleteOh wow! I am planning on installing a electric fireplace in my kitchen. I already have the salvaged mantle and surround. But I am also going to make the entire wall behind it a pallet wall! I would LOVE to have the GC to help towards that! Lisa from HouseOf FabForLess
ReplyDeleteI would use it for more new windows, we're going tomorrow to order some more!
ReplyDeleteThe tile as a frame around the mirror is a FABULOUS idea. I was thinking about framing one of my bathroom mirrors and I really like the mosaics.
ReplyDeleteWe just bought a condo in town and are sprucing up the home we raised our kids in to sell, so I have spent a lot of time and $$ on home improvement lately. I would love the help of a gift card! I could spend it on paint, or mosaic tile, or a new backsplash for the kitchen, or replacement faucets for the master bath, or new carpet, or.....lots of things!! :)
I would paint! We moved in September to NY and have not been able to paint anything
ReplyDeletealain0207@msn.com
I've been wanting to frame my boring ol' mirrors with some nice, stained wood trim for FOREVER! I also really, really want to put up a beadboard backsplash in my kitchen, just like yours!
ReplyDeleteI'd purchase that great Behr paint for several rooms I'm about to repaint. Great giveaway!
ReplyDeleteThe gift card would come in handy for our bathroom project that we are working on.
ReplyDeleteOur bathroom and laundry room!!

I would shop for a new vanity for our bathroom remodel.
ReplyDeleteI've been wanting to do an upholstered headboard for awhile now!
ReplyDeleteWe just moved into our new home so we have tons to do! This house hasn't been touched for 30 years!! So we need new fans, curtain rods, paint and so much more!!
ReplyDeleteI would use it towards that.
Thanks so much!
bvbabybv at gmail dot com
So many, but BEHR paint tops my list!
ReplyDeleteOH wow wouldn't that be great to have some extra $ towards the dining room that needs repainted and something done with the ceiling!
ReplyDeleteWe just found out we are moving so this would be great to give us a start on decorating the new house.
ReplyDeleteNikki

paint for the outside so it needs to warm up so we can do it. ang(merk(underscore)doug(at)alliancecom(dot)net)
ReplyDeleteSo many choices of what to do with $100 from Home Depot!! I think I would buy materials to do my laundry room: tile the floor, paint the walls, maybe some beadboard, and cabinets above the washer and dryer. I ♥ Home Depot!! What I wouldn't do with it is let my husband buy more outdoor Christmas lights.
ReplyDeleteI have so many things on my list, but paint is at the top of it.
ReplyDeleteLove those tiled mirrors. I want to try that in my bathroom.
We are in the process of finishing our basement - a gift card at Home Depot would be great!!!
ReplyDeleteIt would help with the new vinyl floors in my kitchen. We got a few samples before the class last night!!!
ReplyDeleteI'd love to get some new curtains for our home...
ReplyDeleteI would probably work on re finishing the new nightstands I finally got for our room!!
ReplyDeleteThe mirrors turned out sooooo amazing!!! I would love to learn to tile and have a small area in my bathroom that I would like to try the mosaic tile on....as well as many, many other projects I could use a Home Depot gift card for. Thanks for sharing!!!
ReplyDeleteWorking on pantry painting and organizing $100 would come in handy
ReplyDeleteI could put that to use in SO many ways!
ReplyDeleteI didn't know about these classes. I will have to check them out since I am in the Indy area. I would purchase paint since I am into painting now!
ReplyDeletethis would be an awesome giveaway to win, it would help update our current condo!
ReplyDeletejessicarwarfield at gmail dot com
Ooh, replacing the faucet in our kitchen. Or adding beadboard to the kids' bathroom. Or building a new head board for the master. Yep, definitely one of those three. Or...maybe something else! :)
ReplyDeleteJenelle (dot)little(at)gmail(dot)com
My dream is to put up beadboard in our family room, paint and add molding. Oh the dreams!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the giveaway!
I'm desperately needing to replace our moulding/trim. Ugh.
ReplyDeletethanks!

ReplyDeleteTracy
So Much to do, Thank You for sharing the ideas.
ReplyDeleteasplundjulie(at)Hotmail(dot)com
I'm very excited about these workshops! The tiled mirror project didn't interest me too much, but I'm really looking forward to seeing what other projects come up. I'd like to learn about refinishing furniture.
ReplyDeleteI also have a thousand projects I want to do in our house, but redoing our master bedroom is at the top of my list!
ReplyDeletegretlane16 at comcast dot net
I've been eyeing a new closet for months!
ReplyDeleteI've been eyeing a new closet for months!
ReplyDeleteWe are finishing our basement and would LOVE a HD gift card to help out with supplies! :)
ReplyDeleteWhat great ideas and tips! I'd love to win your giveaway! I would buy paint for my laundry room cabinets, and a couple other paint projects I need to do, and new cabinet hardware. Thanks so much for this opportunity!
ReplyDeleteOh, boy, I have a project list about a mile long! But I would probably use this gift card to tackle my downstairs bathroom- some stain for the old oak vanity, some molding for the mirror, and as much beadboard as the rest would accommodate! I think I could do it all for $100. :)
ReplyDelete(tburwinkle at aol dot com)
way to many house projects I could use this on!!!!!
ReplyDeleteI would paint my living room and kitchen area.
ReplyDeleteI would love to build a headboard for my bed!! Love your blog! I plan to start attending the DIY workshops every month.
ReplyDeleteMindy2355atyahoodotcom
I'd love to use that card towards a new kitchen backsplash!
ReplyDeleteOoo I like the tile in the smallest mirror! I want to go to a class!
ReplyDeleteI have so many things that I want to do! We desperately need new carpet upstairs and I want to do some tile or laminate in part of the upstairs. I would get some new, pretty bathroom lights instead of the ugly bar ones. And I am starting a project using lights behind a canvas and painting the front of the canvas, so I need paint and some tools for that. I would really like to tile the kids mirror in their bathroom, too. Loved the Home Depot project! I could go on and on, but that is a start!

ReplyDeleteThose ladies are sure lucky, getting to spend the evening with you. Their projects are gorgeous! I could sure use the gift card!
ReplyDeleteKathirowell31-at-gmail-dot-com
I would use it to build a platform bed for our master bedroom. I can't find the kind I have pictured in my head so I will just build it instead. I haven't had the money to do it, so this would be perfect to get me started!
ReplyDeletereadinglady16 at yahoo dot com
I need to rip the ugly carpeting off the stairs and refinish them.

That workshop looked so cute! I'd love to have $100 to spend at Home Depot. I go there so much! I originally saw this mosaic mirror frame idea in Martha Stewart's LIving mag. I had a mirror in one of my bathrooms that went from wall to wall over the vanity and I wanted to do that tile frame. I figured out that I wanted to remove the mirror, have it cut down a bit, and use it in a portrait style instead of the landscape orientation as it was. After a lot of phone calls to glass places and several OUTRAGEOUS estimates of as much as $200 to cut 8 inches off the mirror, I finally found a reputable business that did the cut for me for $6.50. I added the mosaic tile to the border of the mirror and also added lights on the sides of the mirror and a matching light above. Wish I knew how to send you a picture. I am so pleased with the result. It definitely made the bathroom beautiful.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the giveaway! I'd buy paint with my winnings.
ReplyDeleteThere are so many projects I would love to do. I would love to tile a border on a couple mirrors and really need to do some painting, and stain our pergola. The projects never end.
ReplyDeleteI would love to put mosaic tile around my fireplace. I've been wanting to do I for a while - I'm excited to looking into the tile setting thing you mentioned! LSC13atCORNELLdotCOM
ReplyDeleteBoard and Batten material!!
ReplyDeleteI can think of hundreds of things to do with the gift card :). I think one of the first things I would do is tile my backsplash in the kitchen! Buysellalot at aol dot com
ReplyDeleteBoard & Batten material!(forgot my email on last comment)
ReplyDeletecdmm4atroadrunnerdotcom
I would love to frame my bathroom mirrors and paint my kitchen a lighter color.
ReplyDeleteI would probably replace a pendant light over my kitchen sink. I remember when my kids were little and we used to go to the kids workshops and build birdhouses, tile trivets, planter boxes etc. I'm glad they do something for the crafters.
ReplyDeleteI would use it to help build my new master closets!!
ReplyDeleteI have so many projects I'd like to tackle! I would probably use the gift card towards a tile backsplash for the kitchen though.
ReplyDeletewhat fun!
ReplyDeleteOh....I would use it to buy some shelves for my craft room...almost done with that room....just some shelves and we are going to re-finish an old door for my craft table!! That looks like a fun workshop...wonder if they have those in my area of Michigan??
ReplyDeleteWe just moved into a new house....it needs ALOT of work!!! Paint, peeling wallpaper and removing yucky carpet are the easy fixes! Leveling floors, remodeling bathrooms and kitchen, not so much...but it all needs to be done! This is our third remodel and hoping third time is the charm ;) With four kids and two pets this time..we need to call it good! :) So, after that ramble...I'll say...I would use it frugally for as much as possible!!!

What an awesome giveaway! There are so many projects thy need to be done, but re painting the kitchen or fixing the two holes in the walls that our aon's puppy made would be right at the top of the list!
ReplyDeleteLh6690(at)yahoo(dot)com
I didn't realize that Home Depot even had these workshops! Can't wait to attend one. I want my husband to build a fireplace mantel headboard, this gift card would go a long way toward getting that accomplished!
ReplyDeleteDefinitely upgrade the mirror (trim it) and paint the cabinets in our master bathroom...very mid 90s builder grade. Gonna check out the Home Depot schedule around here.
ReplyDeleteThere are so many projects I have in mind, but I think I would use it to paint the kitchen and I'd love to try my hand at a tile backsplash. The sticky mat instead of mortar sounds like it would make the job so much easier!
ReplyDeleteThose Home Depot seminars look fun! I could use the gift card to finish a project that we are doing right now. We are putting a buffet/dry bar in my dining area with a back splash.
ReplyDeleteThanks for posting this!
Tennille104athotmaildotcom
I'd buy wood and build a frame.
ReplyDeletewow...we have home projects coming out the wazoo! I'd love to repaint my living room, find a couple of new lamps, oh, and did I mention we're refinishing our basement?! We could definitely use this - thank you for the chance :)
ReplyDeleteramoody77(at) gmail (dot)com
For a new lighting fixture for our living room.
ReplyDeleteklynw82atgmaildotcom
I am definitely doing this project OK n my bathroom but first we have to repair flood damage from our neighbour sewer backing up into our home. We were away for a few days :/ They are connected to our septic tank!!?? Our floors have buckled and flooring has been ripped out. It would be wonderful to have a gift card to put towards repairs as its hard to craft around such a mess :-) lauriesatgmail.com
ReplyDeleteOh gosh Sarah, which project? Like choose a favorite? Do one at a time? Hahahahahaha... that will probably never happen in my lifetime. I STILL need to caulk and paint those built in bookshelves I put in the office. I mean, they're painted - mostly. Because I couldn't stand them not painted at all. But they need to be made nice. Caulk, paint, decorate with the library markers I got at a barn sale.
ReplyDeleteAnd I'm in the process of building a bed, I'm planning a huge built in with a twin or full sized window seat and bookshelves and cabinets in the giant alcove in my daughter's bedroom. Honestly, the thing is nearly as big as the guest room. And I need a backsplash. Dire need. I'm not even kidding - it's still builder flat paint. Yuch! Plus I am trying to dream up, design, and DIY the coolest island ever built. In all that free time you have you should help me with this island dreaming/designing. :)
I'm so thrilled you are opening up the world of Home Depot and DIY to so many women. I don't think you get to realize how inspiring you are. There are so many things I do now because of you. Or things I am going to do. It's you, Miss Mustard Seed, and Ana White = my trifecta of girl power! Thank you.
AHHHH! We just went under contract on a total fixer upper in Key West and HD is our new hometown hardware store. I NEED this. hahaha Wonder if I can do the whole house for $100? ;)

ReplyDeleteOh, I am so sad I missed this workshop. I hope I remember to go to the future ones. :-) Will you be teaching the future ones too?
ReplyDeleteKatthielman (at) yahoo (dot) com
I'm not going to enter cuz our Home Depot closed :-( (How can they have too much competition from Lowe's?!?!?)
ReplyDeleteAnyway, seriously want to hear/read about the tile setting mat! There are some projects I'd love to do and I think that would make them easier.
Looks like the HD night was great!

ReplyDeleteI would use the gift card to buy paint! I have been dying to paint our house and get rid of the browns and bring in some grays. This would be just the push I need to get it going. Thanks for the opportunity.
ReplyDeleteI would use the giftcard to finish the molding in our dining room!!

I would use it to paint the kitchen, or our bedroom. Or maybe for landscaping outside. Or one of the other 1000 to do projects!
ReplyDeleteWow, looks like lots of fun! I'm house hunting and I'm sure I'll be able to use $100 gift card for something for a new home!
ReplyDeleteTania
I have a piece of fabric hanging by pushpins in front of our closet window and would love to buy an actual shade or blinds with this gift card!
ReplyDeleteI plan on painting my dining room floor so...paint and all the trimmings.
ReplyDeleteI want to paint our kitchen cabinets and a million other projects!
ReplyDeleteWe are adding a bedroom, bathroom and sitting room to our attic, so I can think of approximately 1 zillion things this would be used for. Paint, tile, closet system, the list is long!
ReplyDeletewe are in the process of finishing our basement, the gift card would really come in handy!!! possibly for bathroom finishes? carpet? roman shades? plenty of options!!!
ReplyDeleteI would use the Home Depot gift card towards new faucets for the two bathrooms in our home. The "builder" faucets just aren't attractive, and one is broken. So new faucets are at the top of my list! Thanks!
ReplyDeletecinbake at hotmail dot com
We have lots of painting projects still to tackle, so I would definitely put the certificate toward paint!
ReplyDeleteWe just signed a contract to build a new home. I see endless projects in my future. First up...tile backsplash in the kitchen.
ReplyDeleteUncommonhousewife at wordpress dot com
There are three or four projects waiting. Most of all I need a new ladder for to the attic. Two rungs are off this old wooden one. I would buy metal. diannet at gmaildot com

I would love to do the the tile on our two builder bathroom mirrors; I've seen these projects on Pinterest but didn't realize Home Depot did a workshop on it. They look great, thanks! :)
ReplyDeleteWanting to update bathroom, love the tiling around the mirror. Great idea and I bet it is easier than tiling our kitchen floor and backsplash (which we did ourselves and it looks awesome)
ReplyDeleteTotally need some seed money to reface the cabinets in my tiny kitchen . . .
ReplyDeleteThis would be a great start :)
i would love to frame all of my bathroom mirrors!
ReplyDeleteI will try again...I don't seem to know how to post. Not trying to overcrowd the box. I would buy paint, spray paint, as I am into painting every piece of junk furniture I find.
ReplyDeleteHi, I would love to win the Home Depot gift card! I have so many projects I want to complete including board and batten, painting my fireplace, a patio and pergola but the most important this spring is building raised beds for a backyard vegetable garden. Thank you! Marlenefit at gmail dot com
ReplyDeleteI would love to get some new shelving for our master closet.

ReplyDeleteI would do some board and batten on my hallway walls. Thanks for the opportunity!
ReplyDeleteI've just discovered your blog via Pinterest...so fun! Thanks for the good pics that enable your readers to really see what you're creating. I'd love to win the giftcard to get new countertops...I've already picked out a laminate that's a stone lookalike. Our present countertops are pretty worn and certainly dated. Thanks for this opportunity!
ReplyDeletenew lights for the kitchen!
ReplyDeleteThis gives me some motivation that I am seriously lacking/avoiding in the master bathroom. The plain builders grade mirror has slight chips from the previous owner and needs some major help. Thinking the tile might just solve that issue and give the entire room a much needed facelift!!!! Hope I win!!!
ReplyDeleteDefinately in our laundry room, which is in the middle icky messy stage, which includes tearing down a wall and moving the plumbing.
ReplyDeleteI'd love to do work on my kitchen floor!! sherriebeaumont at gmail dot com (no spaces)
ReplyDeleteWe are planning to install a deck out back this spring. $100 would definitely help!
ReplyDeleteI want to board & batten my whole house. LOL ;) Looks like you had fun!

PICK ME PICK ME PICK ME PLEEEEEAAASSEEE!!!
Love your blog! Now if I could just find the time, there are many projects I could use it for... Some moulding updates would probably be first.
ReplyDeleteI love the optimism you bring to those of us just learning how to diy. Those tiles (I love the beachy looking small ones too) need to cover the top of my deck table at our cottage. So, that's how I would spend the gift card1 Thanks again-henries33 at att dot net.

I have a light switch that needs a dimmer, as well as some light fixtures that need to be replaced in my bathroom. A HD giftcard would sure come in handy! Thanks for the giveaway!

Love Home Depot workshops. My husband and I attended one when we decided to do a small mosaic tile project on our bathtub, so helpful. We used the tile setting mats and it was so easy and a big time saver instead of using mortar. What would I do with $100 in Home Depot...man the possibilities are endless! I would probably look at some new hardware for our kitchen cabinets first or paint for our smurf blue bathroom!
ReplyDeletedoubledubscraftshop at gmail dot com
This gift card would help us create some bookshelves in our living room.
ReplyDeleteWe need to paint and finish the closet in one of our kids' room. Thanks!

ReplyDeleteSo many projects, so little time... or money! With $100 I'd probably start with paint to re-paint my mom's room and sunscreen film to re-cover her sliding door to provide some privacy.
ReplyDeleteadrianecoros(at)gmail(dot)com
I would attempt to tile my kitchen back splash. The next project would be to paint my living room.. This gift certificate would go along way in starting these projects..Thank you..
ReplyDeleteSeveral things to do - but I would get new molding in my condo!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the opportunity!
I would love to finish my desk. I have part of my desk completed but now I would like to finish the upper portion which includes crown molding.
ReplyDeleteI am dying to paint my front door!! Our house has been on the market for over 2 years and I have a hour commute to school (I'm a teacher) and a 8 month old baby!! Aaaah! Life is crazy. Some diy house updates would be amazing. :) I'm thinking a dark teal blue, our house is brick?
ReplyDeleteThanks!
We need to redo our deck.

Sounds like a really good time.
ReplyDeleteHowdy! This post could not be written any better!
ReplyDeleteReading through this post reminds me of my previous room mate!

Oh my...I would finish updating my light fixtures to oil rubbed bronze (just updated my door hardware thanks to your inspiration)! Some lights will require patching the ceiling as the old fixtures were bigger than the new ones I want. I seem to be a "fixture" at Home Depot lately, buying supplies and learning new skills :-) Gift certificate would help!!

I would replace the rotten baseboards in our bathrooms with tile (as well as tile the floor instead of the stripped vinyl floors) or start on the kitchen reno- buying a bank owned home 4 years ago as provided quite the DIY adventure!
