HomeGoods furniture quality

May 13, 2014

A couple weeks ago a reader asked me about the quality of the HomeGoods furniture that I own and I thought that was a great question. I’m sure everyone has different experiences – but I figured it would be worthwhile to discuss here on the blog.

I think HomeGoods is a great option when it comes to furniture. Their prices are decent (for the most part), but finding something specific is kind of hit or miss. If you see something one week it probably won’t be there the next.

When I was asked about their furniture and really thought about it, I realized I only have a few chairs and a few other items from there. I know at times it seems like half my house is HG stuff! Even I was surprised when I counted them up in my head.

I do have a couple benches I’ve purchased over the years. One sits at the foot of our bed and I’ve had that one for a really long time. I have a redo planned for it but it’s held up great and it’s surprisingly comfortable.

I got this little bench that used to sit at our kitchen table and love it too:

I took the seats off and spray painted it (I bought it in black) and I still love it.

I haven’t had any issues with anything I’ve bought from there. I’m trying to think but I can’t think of any problems. Sometimes things are a bit wobbly and I’ll have to tighten them up. But overall I’ve been pleased.

I do have a few chairs I’ve purchased and a few of them are brand name -- the one in our bedroom is Lane:

My husband LOVES that chair.

I think the quality is fine, but sometimes I do notice things that are ever-so-slightly off.

For example, one duvet cover I bought had a button missing. A tufted button on the bench is loose. The nail head trim on my blue chair in the living room isn’t perfectly aligned:

So I don’t know if they are overstock or if they are sent the HG way because they don’t meet inspections. I suppose it’s a little bit of both.

The issues are always so small you wouldn't even notice them. Same goes for some of the clothing I’ve purchased at TJ Maxx – but some of it has little imperfections and some I can’t find any issues with.

And sometimes there are items that are kind of a mess, and you can get them for an even better deal. :) I did that with our side table in the basement and added a new wood tabletop:

industrial wood and metal table

Overall I’m always really happy with what I buy there. I’ve had a few rugs from HG and some hold up great (usually wool), some don’t at all.

The rug I had in our family room for years didn’t fair well at all, but the new one is wool and is doing great. But that’s par for the course at a place like that, I think anyway.

You just need to look over the item really well before buying. And some things like sticky drawers or uneven legs can be fixed. I always keep the tags on the item for a few days so I can live with it and take it back if needed.

Generally I’m happier with the quality of HomeGoods items than I am my IKEA pieces – and they are pretty similar in price most of the time.

What do you think? Have you purchased from HG and are you happy with the quality?

I haven’t tried any larger pieces like dressers so I can’t speak to those. Do you have a favorite piece of furniture from there? I think mine is the étagère/bookcase in the photo above. :)

  1. We are getting a Home Goods (in the fall I think, it's in progress right now) and I am SO EXCITED! I will make sure to look over the things I find AND keep the tags on just in case for a few days. Thanks for the tips!

    1. Also my front door is now painted Red (I emailed you awhile back). My husband started the project without me, so it didn't go exactly as I planned, but it looks super fantastic.

  2. I LOVE Homegoods!!! In fact a Homegoods gift card was what I requested for Mother's Day! I have had absolutely no quality issues with anything I've bought there. Awesome style for great prices is what I love about Homegoods I usually shop the clearance aisles for the best deals.

Sarah, I love your bedroom boxed wood trim accent wall. It's divine!:-)

  3. I have an extremely nice. Hair in our master bedroom from HG. It's gorgeous and perfect and I was told by the manager of the store it was a custom piece ordered by a designer but didn't work out for the client. Who knows. But it's perfect and extremely high quality and its my favorite find.

  4. While I love HG and most of the items therein, many of their furniture pieces are made from MDF, not actual wood. That's not a reason to hate it, but something to know and consider.

  5. GAH!! I just found your blog, quite by accident, and I've wasted the entire time my toddler was napping surfing around here at Thrifty Decor Chick! (Ultimately this means that you're basically responsible for the fact that my laundry didn't get folded... and my dirties didn't get loaded into the dishwasher... and the floors didn't get mopped, but I've enjoyed your blog thoroughly!) Jesus just didn't give me the spiritual gift of decorating, so I've decided that you should probably just march yourself on over to MY house, so that we can have coffee together, and then... when the Starbucks cups are empty... you can stand up and say something fancy and glittery like, "Can I redecorate your home now?" And I would jump to my feet and say, "YES," exactly like Cinderella probably did when she got her new ball gown. I love and adore your bathroom makeover with the wood slat walls, and I think I pinned all of those snapshots onto Pinterest, because... you know... maybe someday I could do something like that, when the toddler is no longer a toddler and doesn't need to be hauled out of playing in the water in the toilet bowl all the time. Anyway, your blog is great, and your house is adorable. Well played!

  6. I only own a few accessories from home goods, and I absolutely abhor Ikea. I like what I have, except the cheapie bookcase. I had to put nails and screws all over that thing.

  7. I only have three HG pieces (a cabinet, a side table, and a rug) but they are all good. The cabinet does have a sticky door and the table had a discolored patch (easily fixed with a wood stain marker :), but they're in great shape otherwise. And the rug has held up fantastically well. My mom has also gotten more than a few pieces (a chair and ottoman most recently) and hers have been in excellent shape with no issues.

  8. My favorite find was the chairs I use in my office. They were on clearance for $40 each and I JUST saw them in this months HGTV magazine for $249 a pair! Whoo Hooo!

  9. HomeGoods and TJ Maxx are catch all types of stores. They are mix of several seasons and styles. It takes a good eye and patience to truly score in those types of places. I'd usually go after work on Tuesdays and Wednesdays when it's calm.

  10. Homegoods isn't the best quality in the world but it's so great to shop anyway. You never know what they're going to have and sometimes you can find just the right thing there.

  11. My favorite purchase from Home Goods is two light blue paisley parsons chairs for my dining room table. They look great at each end of the table and are really pretty. They were $99 a piece, but would have costs hundreds of dollars each at Bassett or the like. SCORE!

  14. A few weeks ago, I saw someone pin a gorgeous office chair from HomeGoods. I didn't even know they sold furniture?!?! So thank you for writing about this. I do plan on going there and picking up a chair sometime.

  15. I buy there but have to look things over carefully because it seems like many items are slightly damaged, scratched, crooked, etc. It almost seems like they are sent items that are imperfect but sometimes it doesn't matter. I got a huge wall clock to go up on a tall wall and from the ground you can't even tell it's not perfect.

  16. I've purchased a wool rug which, though it shed, was fine until my cats started scratching it and the loops kept coming up. my half moon table is the perfect slim piece for my not really a hallway hallway...I am always amazed at the weird giant pieces, do you ever see them there? like a giant, 6 feet tall giraffe, or a 5 feet tall lantern. who has a house for those things? going back to the furniture, it annoys me when I see an obviously dented/messed up piece, and the clearance price is like 20 bucks off. they gotta do better than that.

  18. I have never bought furniture from HG before but I really like some of their décor and have too much probably. My biggest complaint; however, so much is made in China and I don't like that. I try to buy USA made whenever possible even when it means paying more. I am happy to do whatever it takes to give America our jobs back since so many have been outsourced.

  19. i have a SOFA from HG...yep our living room sofa...it's a couch with a chaise lounge on the one side...it's grey and mid century and is GREAT! I can't find a tag but we've had it for 4 years and it's held up tremendously plus it's comfortable. I have two kids and they've spilled, spit and smudged stuff all over it and it cleans up great. I also have end tables, knick knacks, bedding and baskets and I love everything I get. I keep the tags on too for a couple of weeks just in case they go kaput..(and sometimes I forget to take them off) but I haven't had any problems

  20. When we remodeled our kitchen about 8 years ago, I bought my bar stools at HG. I was looking for plain wooden stools without a back that had a swivel seat, and I went into HG and there they were! They had three of the tall ones and two of the matching shorter ones. I needed three, so I got the tall ones. About a week later I decided I wanted the shorter ones also to use in another place. When I went back, they only had one left. I did get it, and have not been sorry, but have never seen any of those bar stools at HG since. All the bar stools have held up well, and we still love them. But like you said, if you see something you like, if you wait, you likely won't see it there again later.

  21. I buy all my lamps there because I can't find quality lamps anywhere else for the price. I noticed faint scratching on a giant mercury glass lamp I bought there, which is why I am guessing it was $70 rather than the $200 tag I've seen elsewhere. Other than that, I am happy with everything I purchase at Marshall's or homegoods!

  22. You wrote about tufted buttons being lose, which brought a question to my mind...if you have furniture where the tuft has come 'untufted' do you know how to 'retuft' it?? :-) I have a chair and you can't get into the back of it.
Thank you and love the blog!

    1. Cathy thank you! You'd probably have to figure out a way to get inside to really tighten it up. I haven't figured out how to do so any other way -- wish I could help more!

  23. Hi Sarah,
I first have to ask you where you bought the light fixture above your dining table? I really like it.
Now back to the topic at hand, I enjoy shopping at HG also although I haven't purchased much in the way of furniture there. I did however purchase 5 counter stools and recovered the cushions. They look great but honestly the quality is not great. Many of the screws have fallen out at random times. My husband has tightened them up and it still happens sometimes(bizarre). AND, on top of that one of the stools foot rests has fallen off when someone sits down on it, several times. It is embarrassing! One of these days, we will replace the darn things with more expensive better quality stools but for now at least they look nice... Kim ~

  24. I've bought several chairs and they have held up great and are very comfortable. All the lamps are amazing and priced so well! I bought a mirror awhile back that had a few imperfections and so I returned it... they just stuck it right back out on the shelf without a discount or anything so I think they could be better about that. I just bought a 9x12 wool rug this past weekend and it had a couple of loose strands so I asked for a discount and they took a little over 10% off which I was happy with since I was able to just snip them and you can't even tell.
